Just this past weekend I had the honor of photographing a special event in Las Vegas. Every year, a small team of people, put on a great event called Law Enforcement Appreciation Day. I was presented with the opportunity to donate my time by photographing the event. I was more than happy to do this. The tragedy that occurred in Las Vegas on October 1st has had a huge impact on me and the rest of the city. Since that terrible day and the days that followed, my appreciation and respect for the first responders has grown exponentially. Everyone did such an amazing job that night and every night before and after. I feel such a strong sense of pride being a Las Vegas resident and the whole thing has really brought everyone closer. Its rare to drive down the street, or walk through a parking lot without seeing a Vegas Strong sticker on a car.
This event started off with the color guard and more. There were speeches from the Mayor, Sheriff, and Police Commissioner. A member of the police force was asked to write a poem for the event and what he shared was powerful. It was about the tragedy and I was in tears kneeling on the ground photographing it. Just hearing about it brings up all kinds of emotions.
I am so thankful to all of those that put their lives on the line day after day protecting us and our great city.
